very real time
Very Real Time is a one month residency for 7 artists working in socially engaged techniques. It took place in Cape Town, South Africa, during September, 2003. The emphasis in this project is on personal contact on a meaningful level and beyond the constraints of art codes, techniques and networks. The project involved both local and overseas artists, including Michael Blum, Cinthia Marcelle, Bridget Baker, Jo o' Connor, Thembinkosi Goniwe, James Beckett and Gregg Smith, who was the main organisor of the project.
While artists will received a fair-sized work budget they were not expected to produce a tangible object during this period. The preference was for projects which operate in a non-gallery context and deal directly in human exchange.
It should also be noted that projects were not necessarily valued for the amount of viewers/participants involved, nor specifically for the overt moral/political/social relevance of the work. While the latter is not discounted, it was intended that projects first of all engage viewers and participants in their own personal reality in a way which is insightful, challenging and perhaps fun for both artist and participant.
In total the project aimed to realise a series of performances, interventions and video work as well as the lasting possibilities of new relationships formed during this period, both in and beyond the art context.
Because of the ephemeral nature of the work there was no formal exhibition to conclude the project. There will however be a workshop and a presentation, both of which will be hosted by the Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT. A catalogue will be produced at the conclusion of Very Real Time.
Very Real Time has been hosted by the Association for Visual Arts Gallery and made possible by support from The National Arts Council, The Royal Netherlands Embassy and the RAIN Artists' Initiative Network.
