Him
We've met before haven't we? Don't I look familiar to you? Well unfair if I didn't tell you, I do know some things about you already. Ok, lets do this, I.ll tell you what I think I know, and you correct me where necessary, ok? Ok.
You came here to this town, not so long ago. Your life was a mess. By your standards, you have very high standards, I like that. I also have high standards. Your life wasn't completely terrible, but things hadn't worked out the way you had hoped they would. I know that feeling. When you were young you did all the right things, you worked hard, you were responsible, a role model for society. You had a beautiful partner, you bought a house together, and then things started going wrong. Your partner left you, you started to doubt your job, your sense of meaning in life just evaporated. And this went on for quite a few years. Eventually you threw it all in and came here.
You looked up an old friend of yours, someone you studied with. But you haven't seen each other for a few years, you.ve drifted. I think he chose a path less safe than yours, but now finally he.s starting to find a moderate degree of success, and you resent that. It.s perfectly natural. I would do the same.
You ask your friend if you can stay with him for a few weeks until you find a job and an apartment, get yourself set up. And its fine, he lives with his wife but they have a spare room, you move in. It doesn't take you long to realise that your friend and his wife they.re no longer very close, in fact they haven't slept together for years. You find out, it.s the strangest thing, but your friend never really liked sex. His wife on the other hand does. You become the confident of your friend.s wife, you find out she has regular lovers, the next step is easy- you become one of them. You never had sex with a woman before, did you? You always thought you preferred men. It.s none of my business, I.m sorry.
One day your friend comes home unexpectedly in the middle of the day and he finds you in bed with his wife. It.s an appalling situation, but to make matters worse he doesn't say anything, he leaves quietly, almost apologetically, but everybody hears the latch. Later that evening he comes home. Everyone tries to be cheerful but the air is heavy. It.s complete bullshit. You move out the next day.
Then where do you go, this part I don't know. Maybe you stay in cheap hotels until you found a job and an apartment. At any rate you lose touch with your friend and his wife for quite a few months.
Until. This part I know. It.s Friday evening, you decide to go out for a drink to unwind, you enter a bar, you order a beer, you turn around and.boom! There, on the other side of the room is the wife of your friend. Sitting with me. Voila.
Small world, isn't it? Now here you are coming to look for a job. And look, as far as I.m concerned you might get it. You.re good. The question is, do you want it?
Her
I remember that evening very well. I.d been having dinner with a colleague at the Spanish restaurant further down the road. We were going to go and watch a movie afterwards but he was feeling ill and went straight home after dinner.
I must admit it was a surprise to see you and Linda sitting there at that table. Linda used to tell me about some of her lovers, so I wondered which one you might be. Now I see your name is Phillip. You were the one she used to call Turbo.
Your wife, I don't remember her name, but she works with Simon, and your children go to the same day care centre as Simon and Linda.s son. I was with Linda a few times when she picked them up from the day care centre and brought them home for you when you or your wife or you couldn't make it. You have beautiful kids.
I remember one day your younger daughter, Katey I think her name is, told us you were taking them to the river that weekend. I remember thinking how wonderful that was. I felt envious.
You.re right, it is a small world, we did actually run into each other again after that time in the bar, but I don't think you would remember this time, you didn't notice me. You were standing in a cue waiting for a bank machine on a Saturday morning. It was snowing. Your family were further down the road looking into the window of a pet shop. Your daughter saw me passing by and called out to me. She told me that you were going to buy them a kitten.
Well, I think you.ll have to make up your own mind about whether you want to hire me or not. But if you do decide to take me, I think we.ll probably both find that we really don't know that much about each other at all.
